While large family gatherings and extensive travel for the Thanksgiving holiday are being discouraged amid the COVID-19 pandemic, American Airlines is still expecting a spike in travelers. The airline has upped their cleaning and sanitization protocols to help stop the spread of the virus. Surface areas such as tray tables and seat belts are wiped down by crews after each American flight. Prior to the pandemic, cleaning crews averaged five minutes sanitizing an aircraft. According to American Airlines, they now typically spend about twenty minutes working before a new group of passengers boards. American Airlines is expecting a fifteen percent increase in flights over the next twelve days. This year, the airline will be averaging 4,000 flights a day, down from 6,200 during the Thanksgiving holidays 2019.
