A group of mostly Central American migrants gathered next to the border wall dividing the U.S. and Mexico in Tijuana on Saturday for a traditional Mexican "posada". The event was originally planned to bring together migrant families separated by the border. But according to the organizers, U.S. authorities would not allow people on the U.S. side to approach the border wall.
Migrants peered through the border fence as Christmas carols were sung and organizers passed out small presents to children and Mexican treats to attendees. Tens of thousands of migrants, mostly from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, have been returned to Mexico under a Trump administration policy known as the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP) to await their U.S. immigration court hearings.
