Residents in New Zealand's town of Whakatane said on Wednesday that they were still in "shock" two days after a volcanic eruption on nearby White Island killed six people.

Smoke plumes could still be seen rising from the volcano on Wednesday morning, but in Whakatane, it was business as usual. Increasing tremors on the volcanic island hampered efforts by authorities to recover the bodies of eight people thought to be left on the island.

Daily tours bring more than 10,000 visitors to the privately owned island every year, marketed as "the world's most accessible active marine volcano."
