Pinera may use military to protect infrastructure

Chilean President Sebastian Pinera said on Sunday that the number of police on the streets would increase and he will give new powers to the Armed Forces to protect public infrastructure. Pinera also announced other measures aimed at containing violence in the country which has recently suffered from a month of social unrest. 

Pinera said he would send Congress a bill this week aimed at enabling the Armed Forces to protect critical infrastructure. He also said Chilean National Police Force would receive professional training from the English, Spanish and French police to improve the mechanisms of public order, to give a better safety to our compatriots. Pinera said that in the next two months, 4,354 more troops will be deployed to the streets.
