
The Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization, Centre for History and Tradition (SEAMEO CHAT) began its 18th Governing Board Meeting in Yangon on Thursday.
SEAMEO was founded in 1965 and Myanmar became a member country in 1997. SEAMEO CHAT was established in Myanmar in 2000. There are 11 SEAMEO’s member countries – 10 ASEAN countries and Timor-Leste.
Deputy Director, SEAMEO CHAT, Win Myat Aung said “All programs and activities performed by SEOMO CHAT last year will be reported to the governing board that will provide suggestions and recommendations. The proposal on ways forward will also be submitted. In the year 2018-2019, we organized international and local paper reading sessions for capacity building. We also provided lectures about Myanmar history and sent off enthusiasts from foreign countries to Mandalay and Bagan.”
SEAMEO has 26 regional centers undertaking training and research in the fields of Education, Science and Culture. The Governing Board Members of regional centers suggest, support and give opinions on activities, projects and programs of each centre through annual meetings.
Director, Humanities Branch, Ministry of Education (Singapore), Kenneth Lee said “We will be looking at talking about ways in which to develop the programme so that the teachers, people who are doing culture and heritage will be able to benefit from this program. I bring back the things that I learn here to be able to apply it in Singapore.”
In 2020 marking its 20th anniversary, SEAMEO CHAT plans to hold international conference, exhibition and paper reading sessions as well as to release a book about former SEAMEO CHAT members’ experiences. The 2-day meeting will be held until the 6th of September.
