A group of volunteers and the officials from Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) have been working together on an awareness raising project.

The project in Yangon is to help students widen their knowledge on garbage, plastic and waste management. The project was started in September 2018, and now it’s reached to over 40 basic education schools in townships of Yangon East District, officials said.

At the Basic Education High School No.1 in Thingangyun Township, volunteers also highlighted that traffic, garbage and drainage issues are the top concerns in Yangon.

Volunteer, Aung Foundation, Thein Htein said “After the project here, we will go to basic education schools in Dagon Seikkan Township. After that, we can say the project can cover about 200,000 students. Here today, we’d share knowledge on garbage and waste management and also encourage students with moral knowledge. Garbage issue is one of the top concerns in Myanmar especially in Yangon. Young people need to know how to throw the waste and garbage systematically. Many more issues like lack of discipline are also needed to be addressed.”

Not only the students but also the teachers joined the seminar which the volunteers and officials expect to be successful.

Headmaster, B.E.H.S (1) Thingangyun, Myint Aung said “There are over 3,490 students at our school. We are very pleased and welcome this kind of knowledge sharing seminar and campaign for the students to learn about garbage, how to throw their waste systematically and many more. We always educate our students on throwing of garbage and waste systematically at the school assemblies regularly.”

Grade-10 Student, Kyi Phyu Thant said “It’s really great – we can widen our knowledge today through the seminar. Our teachers also educate us how to throw trash systematically.”

Grade-10 Student, May Shin Thant said “Today, I got a lot of knowledge on garbage, plastic and waste management. I will share what I got to know today with my family and friends.”

The project is expected to cover over 200,000 students for garbage, plastic and systematic waste management knowledge within this year.
