The Indian Embassy is hosting a range of yoga events across Myanmar to mark the 11th International Day of Yoga 2025 in collaboration with the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre (SVCC).
A total of 14 yoga sessions are scheduled across prominent sites in Yangon and Nay Pyi Taw, such as Kandawgyi Gardens, People’s Park, Mahabandoola Park, the Maravijaya Buddha Park and Thatta Thattaha Maha Bawdi Pagoda.
As part of the ongoing celebrations, a large gathering took place this Sunday at Yangon’s Kandawgyi Gardens, drawing enthusiastic participation from yoga practitioners.
Yoga Practitioner said "I practice yoga regularly with my friends. This year, I joined the Indian Yoga group, which has been a great experience. Practicing yoga has really helped improve my health, it’s especially good for relieving joint pain and supporting the respiratory system. That’s why I always encourage people, both young and old, to give yoga a try."
Held during early morning hours, the sessions are free and accessible to all, featuring a mix of postures, breathing techniques and mindfulness practices suited to each location.
Yoga Teacher, Embassy of India, SVCC, Dr. Ankita Sood said “I would say that for me, Yoga is not just one dimension of practicing asanas or breathing. It’s a way of life. It has been absolutely core part of my life. And it has changed me immensely to balance me. So that I can be absolutely balanced in stressful situations, I can be comfortable. I keep myself fit, I keep myself healthy, both externally, internally. That’s how I’m spreading and promoting Yoga everywhere.”
Introduced by India and endorsed by the United Nations in 2014, the annual observance has evolved into a global movement. Marking its 11th year, the Indian Embassy in Myanmar is hosting a series of themed activities under “Yoga for One Earth, One Health.”
Director, Embassy of India, SVCC, Dr. Ashish Kumar said “Yoga is basically for physical fitness as understood by the society, but it is more important for the mental fitness. If you are practicing yoga, you will be physically fit as well as you’ll be mentally fit also. So, in this new era of generation where information is coming so fast, and we are troubling in a stressed time. We should practice yoga not for only physical but also for mental peace. Not for only external fitness but for internal fitness also.”
Launched on April 7, 2025, the ongoing International Day of Yoga celebrations in Myanmar will conclude on June 21 with major public sessions at Thilawa Port and Thuwunna National Indoor Stadium in Yangon.
