Once the final proposal was submitted, the archaeological experts will visit Mrauk-U to evaluate the details of the proposal to decide whether Mrauk-U’s cultural heritage will be recognized as a World Heritage Site at the UNESCO Conference in 2023.

Deputy Director General, Department of Archaeology and National Museum, Dr Thein Lwin said “Once it was inscribed on the World Heritage List, it will achieve many benefits. Mrauk-U, being a national level heritage site, is one of the tourist destinations and it has been attracted many tourists from local and abroad. We can attract more foreign tourists, and many job opportunities can be created for the locals.”

Located at the junction of the deltaic plain and the Rakhine Yoma Mountains, Mrauk-U is the capital of Mrauk-U kingdom. Mrauk-U houses a rich collection of temples and pagodas of ancient time after the ancient city Bagan which was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2019.
