To celebration the World Environmental Day which falls on 5th June, a commemorative event was held at the Graduation Hall of Dagon University in Yangon on 6th June.
World Environmental day is celebrated annually on 5th June and is the United Nations’ principle vehicle for encouraging awareness and action for the protection of the environment.
The celebration at the Dagon University aims to educate the students of 2022-23 academic years on the awareness on climate change.
Dr. Thar Tun Maung, Rector, Dagon University said “This event will focus on the topic of climate change and how to conserve a changing environment. In fact, we will plant 1,000 species of trees including mango, jackfruit and flowers in the university campus together with our students and staffs.”
The celebration for the World Environmental Day was first observed in Sweden in 1973 and in 2022, it was held in 155 countries including Myanmar. The theme for this year even is “Only One Earth” which draws the attention of world people towards playing their role effectively while living in perfect harmony with nature - without proving a burden on it.
Dr. Myo Min, Pro-Rector, Dagon University said “The topic of the event is global warming and its pros and cons and how to mitigate them. Its aim to make students aware of how important the global environment is for human beings to live. Global warming is causing more droughts, hurricanes and food shortages, so we want students to know how to reduce its impact.”
About 1,000 students and 50 teachers from 20 majors of Dagon University attended the ceremony.
