Spectators cheered on fancy-dress clad swimmers competing in the World Bog Snorkelling Championships, a bizarre sporting event in rural Wales celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. The rules allow flippers but impose strict doggy paddling only, and breathing through a snorkel.

The championships involve athletes competing by snorkeling 120 yards up and down a bog in the fastest time.  The fancy dress is judged before entering the bog. This year, an extra category has been added for the best 'Ruby' costume.
