Veterinarians from the Austrian animal welfare organization Four Paws performed a critical procedure to save a sick elephant at a zoo in southern Pakistan on Wednesday.

The teams did the complex procedure with the help of a crane and a fire truck propping the elephant up.Noor Jehan, 17, was brought to Karachi with three other elephants more than a dozen years ago.Videos of her leaning her head against a tree and struggling to stand have caused alarm in Pakistan.

After a series of procedures, the elephant has a good chance of survival. The experts did an ultrasound and found a large hematoma in abdomen, which is affecting her organs.Amir Khalil, Director of Four Paws said “We know now which treatment the elephant needs, not only medical treatment but also the physical treatment, the massage for the elephant, the water massage.

The movement -- the elephant should not be chained from today. The elephant should be in a bigger area, should move. This is what Noor Jahan needs.” Khalil said authorities have agreed to relocate Noor Jehan to a better place with her fellow elephant because her current conditions are unsuitable.
