Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido, who defied a travel ban to seek support in Europe for new elections in his country, said on Wednesday that he would attempt to return to Caracas but expected it to be dangerous. Last January, Guaido invoked the constitution as head of congress and declared President Nicolas Maduro an usurper.

Earlier this month, Venezuela's ruling Socialist Party seized control of the National Assembly and swore in an allied politician who defected from Guaido's camp. then opposition lawmakers voted Guaido in for a second term as congress chief in a separate session. Guaido is recognized as Venezuela's president by more than 50 countries including the United States and most European Union members. He is expected to appear at the World Economic Forum in Davos this week.
