Deputy Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs U Htein Lin visited the Aung San Stadium in Mingala Taungnyunt Township of Yangon Region on Saturday, to inspect plans for upgrading the facility.

Accompanied by officials from the Department of Sports and Physical Education, the Deputy Minister reviewed the condition of the east, west, north and south spectator stands, as well as the volleyball, taekwondo and weightlifting halls, and other buildings. He also inspected areas planned for renovation and discussed necessary steps for upgrading the sports complex.

Aung San Stadium, originally built in 1906 and formerly known as BAA (Burma Athletic Association Ground), is a historic sports venue in Yangon.

It has hosted many local and international events, including the Southeast Asian Peninsular Games in 1961 and 1969. Due to its age and about 70 percent structural damage, experts recommended building a new modern stadium with a running track. The project will be implemented with assistance from the People’s Republic of China, following a bilateral agreement and guidance from the State leadership.
