Britain's Work and Pensions Secretary Amber Rudd resigned from the government and ruling Conservative Party on Saturday, saying she could not stand by while loyal party members were expelled. Earlier this week, 21 Conservative lawmakers were ousted from the party after failing to vote with Prime Minister Boris Johnson's government.

The expelled members included the grandson of Britain's wartime leader Winston Churchill and two former finance ministers. Rudd, also a former interior minister, said the lawmakers' expulsion was an assault on decency and democracy.
