US President Donald Trump took another step on Thursday to correct what he calls unfair global trade practices. He has signed a plan to impose "reciprocal tariffs," which means the US will match the levies other countries have placed on American goods.
The plan calls on officials to consider new tariffs on trading partners that have targeted American exports with high levies. Tariffs will be determined on a case-by-case basis, with those decisions coming at the beginning of April. Trump said other nations can avoid economic harm by reducing or eliminating their own levies on the US.
Japan is one of the countries scheduled for review. A White House official has reportedly noted that while the country's tariff rates are relatively low, its structural barriers remain high.
