Triathlete dies in Ironman in Chile

An athlete competing in the Ironman 70.3 Pucon tournament in Chile's Araucanía region died during the swimming section of the competition on Sunday.  The 38-year-old triathlete, who has not been identified by authorities, performed the first stage of swimming, which was 1.9 kilometers, in Lake Villarrica.

Authorities indicated that the athlete was taken unconscious from the water, immediately receiving first aid. He was then transported to Pucón Hospital where he was pronounced dead.  Chile's minister of sport described the tragedy as "very painful".  The cause of the athlete's death hasn't been confirmed.
