President U Min Aung Hlaing on Wednesday visited the Gateway of India in Mumbai, where officials welcomed him and conducted a guided tour of the monument.
Situated on Mumbai's waterfront, the Gateway of India is a historic landmark that commemorates the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to India in 1911. Construction began in 1915 with a foundation-stone-laying ceremony and was completed in 1924.
Following India's independence, the last battalions of the British Army departed from India through this gateway in 1948, symbolizing the end of British rule. Its architecture is a blend of 16th-century Islamic and Hindu styles, known as the Indo-Saracenic style, and it is constructed from yellow basalt stone.
The central arch stands approximately 85 feet high. Often referred to as the "Taj Mahal of Mumbai," it attracts large numbers of tourists from around the world. President U Min Aung Hlaing and delegation later proceeded to the Chhatrapati Shivaju Maharaj International Airport and observed the operation process of the airport.
