The death toll from floods and mudslides caused by torrential rains in southern Brazil has risen to 29 and 60 missing, authorities said Thursday.

Authorities in Rio Grande do Sul have declared a state of emergency as rescuers continue to search for dozens of people reported missing among the ruins of collapsed homes, bridges and roads. As the rains continued, forecasts warned the state's main Guaiba River would reach an extraordinary level of three meters by Thursday and four meters on Friday.
