The historic Gokteik Viaduct in northern Shan State was partially destroyed on Sunday, after TNLA armed group detonated mines.
A 60 ft section of the bridge near Kyaukme was damaged. Built in 1899 and completed in 1900, Gokteik Viaduct is one of Myanmar's most iconic landmarks, situated at 1,100 ft above sea level, and it is considered the second-highest railway bridge in the world.
Connecting Naungcho and Kyaukme on Mandalay-Lashio Railway, it has long been a popular destination for both local and international visitors. The attack has sparked widespread public condemnation, as the bridge is not a military target but a national heritage site. Security forces are continuing operations to stabilize the area and pursue those responsible.
