Hundreds of new conscripts have arrived at the Life Guards regiment in Kungsängen, northwest of Stockholm, marking the start of Sweden’s 2026/27 military training cycle.
More than 9,000 young men and women are expected to begin military service as Sweden expands its armed forces and strengthens national defence readiness. Military officials say interest in conscription is rising amid the war in Europe and growing global security concerns. Mathias Wallin, Battalion Commander, First Infantry Brigade Life Guard said "What we can see in general is that the motivation is increasing because of the security situation in the world in general, and that there is a war ongoing in Europe.
Sweden says the expanded conscription programme will provide a larger pool of trained personnel and strengthen the country’s overall military readiness.
