Sufficient Water Supply: Plans Underway To Form The Water User Federation

Plans are underway to form the Water User Federation in order to provide efficient supply of irrigated water for monsoon and summer paddy plantations.

At present, about 8,500 Water User Groups have been formed with the participation of 2.2 million members.

According to Irrigation and Water Utilization Department, Water User Group is createdwith the aim to engage in summer paddy cultivation, to distribute more irrigated waterand to cooperate in sharing water for efficient usage.

Assistant Director, Irrigation and Water Utilization Department, Maung Maung Moe Nyunt said “There are about 8500 water groups and over 2.2 million farmers have already joined these groups. We would like to urged farmers to participate in the WUG, and cooperate with the department in managing and sharing water for efficient use of irrigated water.”

Farmers are urged to use the irrigated water without any wastage in order to provide sufficient irrigated water during summer.

Assistant Director, Irrigation and Water Utilization Department, Maung Maung Moe Nyunt said “Base on the experience we have year by year, we need to calculate how much water can be used in the hot season and how much level of water needed to leave for the rainy season. The arid regions need irrigated water for monsoon paddy cultivation but it does not necessary in lower Myanmar.”

11 Water User Associations have been formed in 10 regions and states, and over 9,600 acres from 12 irrigated areas are being implemented in six regions and states at present.
