Start of Orthodox Easter celebrations in Turkey

Orthodox Easter celebrations were held in St. George's Cathedral in Istanbul on Saturday. A spiritual leader of the world's Orthodox Christians led a liturgy in the cathedral.

He is considered first among equals among Eastern Orthodox patriarchs, which gives him prominence but not the power of a Catholic pope. H

e oversees Greek Orthodox and some other jurisdictions, although large portions of the Eastern Orthodox world are self-governing under their own patriarchs. Orthodox Christians mark Easter this week because they follow the old Julian calendar.
