Supporters of the LGBT community took to Madrid's streets on Saturday to denounce the rise of the far-right and prevent political groups from using their rights as a bargaining chip. Earlier in the year, the far-right Vox Party pledged to curtail gay pride parades while heaping ridicule on diversity lessons it wants to scrap in schools and has even drawn parallels between homosexuality and bestiality.

In Madrid, the People's Party rules the city government with the backing of Vox as well as the centre-right Ciudadanos party. The nationalist, anti-immigration Vox won about 10 percent of the votes in a national election last April. Spain will hold its fourth election in four years on Nov. 10 after rival parties failed to break a months-long impasse in a deeply fragmented parliament.
