Severe weather dusts Athens with layer of snow

A snowstorm hit the Greek capital Athens on Monday, snarling traffic, forcing flight cancellations, and suspending coronavirus vaccinations in the broader Athens region. The storm also blanketed several Greek islands in snow.  

Authorities warned the public to limit movements outdoors to the essential while schools in many areas were shut.  The snow was coming down thick and fast in central Athens, settling on the marble columns of the ancient Acropolis. 

Snow chains were mandatory for cars on many roads on the border of Athens, while trucks were banned from circulation on the main highway heading north from the capital.
