Flag-waving protesters marched through the streets of Glasgow on Saturday, calling for a second referendum on Scottish independence. Despite Scots rejecting independence by 55% to 45% in a 2014 referendum, Scotland's First Minister Sturgeon has demanded a new independence referendum after Brexit, arguing that circumstances have changed.

Sturgeon's pro-independence, anti-Brexit Scottish National Party (SNP) won 48 of Scotland's 59 parliamentary seats in December's UK-wide election, which showed overwhelming support for her agenda to hold such a referendum. A majority of Scots voted to remain in the European Union in a 2016 referendum, while the United Kingdom voted to leave. Britain's exit from the bloc is scheduled for January 31.
