Russian army targeted an ammunition depot in the Ukrainian town of Vasylkiv on the outskirts of Kyiv on Saturday, causing hundreds of small explosions. Two columns of smoke rose southwest of the capital.

A frozen food warehouse just outside Kyiv also was struck in an apparent effort to target the city's food supply. Russia's strategy mirrors tactics that Russian forces have previously used in other campaigns, notably in Syria and Chechnya, to crush armed resistance.

On Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Russia of kidnapping the mayor of Melitopol, and praised residents for demanding his release after surveillance video showed him being marched out of city hall apparently surrounded by Russian soldiers.
