UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell condemned armed groups in Haiti for committing severe rights violations against children.  Russell addressed the grave situation of children's rights violations in Haiti at the ECOSOC special meeting.

Catherine Russell, UNICEF Executive Director said  “Armed groups are regularly committing grave rights violations against children … including killing, and maiming. So far, this year, we have seen a staggering 1,000 percent increase in reported incidents of sexual violence against children. This is an abomination. To add to the horror, armed groups are also actively recruiting and using children in their operations.”

.” Russell reported that children make up 30-54% of armed group members in Haiti, with a 70% rise in recruitment. These children are used for violence, forced labor, and sexual exploitation. Russell also urged Haiti’s government to take action to protect children and address the security situation to fulfill urgent needs for food, education, and housing.
