Romania started a vaccination campaign for children aged  5 to 11 on Wednesday. The country hit a pandemic record of nearly 35,000 daily cases, almost doubling its previous record set only a day earlier.

Daily cases have skyrocketed since the emergence of the omicron variant and deaths have also begun to climb. Approximately 60 children were scheduled to get the jab at the centre on Wednesday, but medical personnel said families could also come without an appointment. Romania, which has seen nearly 60,000 deaths since the pandemic began, is the European Union's second-least vaccinated nation, with just 41% fully inoculated compared to a bloc average of 70%.
