Australian Defence Forces rescued stranded residents by helicopter Tuesday after severe flooding in Australia's most populous state. The military helped airlift people left stranded on roofs with homes left near totally submerged following extreme rainfall in the northern areas of New South Wales.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison warned the impacts of the current "weather bomb" will affect New South Wales throughout the week. State officials said there have been 1,000 rescues so far, with more than 6,000 calls for assistance received by authorities. About 40,000 people have been ordered to evacuate, while 300,000 others have been placed under evacuation warnings.
