In a significant step toward advancing the peace process and national development, Myanmar successfully held a free and fair multi-party democracy general election in three phases starting from December 28, 2025.

Hluttaw representatives were duly elected, based on the clear will of the general public. After a five-year pause, Hluttaw sessions have now resumed. The Pyithu Hluttaw convened on March 16, followed by the Amyotha Hluttaw on March 18, and Region and State Hluttaws on March 20.

As part of this, the first day of the First Regular Session of the Third Yangon Region Hluttaw took place at the Yangon Region Hluttaw Office on March 20th. U Min Thein Tun of Mayangone Constituency presided as Chairperson Pro Tempore. U Htay Aung of Thaketa Constituency was elected as Speaker, while U Kyaw Kyaw Soe of North Okkalapa Constituency became Deputy Speaker.

Two Hluttaw representatives expressed their commitments to advance the peace process, describing it as the country’s most important priority at present.

Hluttaw Representative, Aye Mya Thae Phyu said "Our main goal is to bring peace and stability to our country. We are working together with ethnic communities and putting forth our utmost efforts to achieve this. That is my sincere wish for the future of our nation. Once peace and stability are established, we plan to conduct field inspections across townships, regions, and states to assess public needs and implement projects that benefit both communities and the country. For the youth, we aim to create more job opportunities with fair salaries, so they can work and thrive locally."

Functioning under the three pillars of government, “legislative, executive, and judiciary”, the Hluttaw plays a crucial role in shaping national governance while serving the public interest.

Hluttaw Representative, Sai Aung Myint Khaing said "Our top priority in the Hluttaw is advancing the peace process, which is the country’s most urgent need. While progress is currently slow, we are making every effort to accelerate it, guided by unity and shared commitment among the public. At the same time, we are focusing on poverty reduction as a second key task. This will be carried out with the best possible approaches, in close cooperation with Myanmar’s experts, partner parties, and government agencies."

The Yangon Region Hluttaw consists of 90 elected representatives, 2 ethnic representatives, and 31 Tatmadaw representatives, as stipulated under Section 161 of the Constitution. At the regional level, the Hluttaw is tasked with electing the Chief Minister, region ministers, the Advocate General, and the Auditor General, following constitutional provisions, Hluttaw procedures, and relevant laws.

The second day of the session will be held soon, with the date and time to be announced. The session comes ahead of the presidential election, scheduled for March 30.
