The Bronx Zoo in New York city is celebrating the birth of its newest marsupial - a Matschie's tree kangaroo. The tiny joey has started to peak out from its mother's pouch for the first time since being born.

The gestation period for these marsupials is very short. They spend six weeks in the womb which is emerging the size of a fingernail and then crawling into their mother's pouch until they are big enough to survive outside.

This Matschie's tree kangaroo is the first to be born at the Bronx Zoo since 2008. The endangered species is native to the forests of Papua New Guinea, and it's estimated that fewer than 2,500 remain in the wild.
