South African President Cyril Ramaphosa declared a national state of disaster on Monday night after the worst floods in recorded history in KwaZulu-Natal State.

The president announced a three-pronged approach in how government intends to deal with the disaster, focusing on immediate relief, recovery and rebuilding.

Ramaphosa also spoke about how the government's approach would be thoroughly overseen and how corruption would not be tolerated in dealing with the disaster. Authorities have reported 443 deaths from the flooding so far.
