A rainy day in Rio didn't stop revelers from enjoying Rio de Janeiro's 24th annual LGBTI pride parade on Sunday. Participants paraded down Copacabana's beach-front in colorful dress as they danced and played music in a celebration and protest for LGBTI rights.
Beyond the singing, dancing and celebration, some attendees brought a political message to the parade. Dozens of people chanted "out with Bolsonaro" in reference to Brazil's far-right president Jair Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro removed gay and transgender concerns from consideration by the human rights ministry on his first day in office. Homophobia is common in Brazil. Like many Latin American countries, Brazil is also home to a growing population of young, educated urban liberals eager to stand up for gay and transgender rights.
