Public Awareness: Earthquake Awareness Launched

An earthquake awareness and preparations lesson was launched at No.7 Basic Education High School (B.E.H.S-7) in Zabu Thiri Township in Nay Pyi Taw on 21st December.  The awareness is organized by the Department of Disaster Management of Nay Pyi Taw under the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement. 

It aims to raise earthquake awareness among the public, to make effective earthquake preparedness and response plans and to lessen damages and loss of properties and lives. 

Kyaw Kyaw Tun, Deputy Director, Dept; Disaster Management(NayPyiTaw), said " Due to the minor earthquakes, seismologists have been predicting the possibility of major earthquake since last 3 years. As our department, we launched awareness events and preparation lessons in not only Nay Pyi Taw but also various regions and states. The Sagaing earthquake fault line is extends from Myitkyina to Yangon River included Nay Pyi Taw and Pyinmana. So, the earthquake can happen at any time and we conducted the awareness and preparation lessons. It has been 5 times of earthquake preparations practice in this year and we have planned to practice again next month."

A total of 480 people included Departmental heads, Charitable organizations, the Red Cross team and students participated in the awareness event.    

Khin Ma Soe, Headmistress, B.E.H.S-7, said "The students will know how to act and what to do when the earthquake occurs from this earthquake awareness. From this event, students can learned about the magnitude of earthquake, what will happened during earthquake, what should be done inside the building during earthquake and the ways how to protect. It is very benefits for them."

Zwe Pyae Aung, Student, B.E.H.S-7, said "Because of this earthquake awareness and preparations lessons, we got knowledge that how and what to do during the natural disasters occur. We found out how to protect according to the set rules during the earthquake.  I want to say thanks to the officials who organized the earthquake awareness event."

According to deputy director, the Department of Disaster Management has planned to open the district-level of training course for natural disasters on 26th November.
