Myanma Radio and Television (MRTV) has launched the production of a series based on the 550 Jataka Stories. A ceremony to mark the commencement of this production was held on Friday at Studio (A) of the MRTV Yangon Office.
The scripts are written and directed by Nan Win, and the series will feature performances by renowned actors including Academy Award-winner Aye Chan Maung, Aung Yay Chan, Ko Ko Kyaw, Shwe Kyo, Academy Award-winner Chu Lay, Su Hlaing Hnin, and Yun Wint Hlwar Aung.
Artistes from the Shwe Nan Theatrical Drama Troupe will also take on supporting roles. The Jataka Stories hold a significant place in Buddhist literature and art. They recount the previous lives of the Buddha in both human and non-human forms, when he existed as a Bodhisattva, an enlightened being-in-training.
These tales illustrate the practice of the ten perfections, or transcendental virtues, which are central to the Buddhist path toward enlightenment and liberation from samsara, the endless cycle of rebirth.
MITV is a broadcast TV brand intended for international and local English speaking consumers, launched on 31st March 2010 based in Yangon.
