The Myanmar National Human Rights Commission (MNHRC) strongly and categorically rejects the baseless media statement issued by the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) on 22 December 2025.
MNHRC utterly condemns this statement, which is replete with unsubstantiated allegations and presents a one-sided narrative that flagrantly disregards the complex realities and the sovereign rights of Myanmar. The use of politicized and pejorative terminology such as "military junta" is disrespectful, deliberately inflammatory, and fundamentally violates the core principles of ASEAN solidarity and non-interference. Such actions fall far outside the mandated role of a National Human Rights Institution.
Myanmar is a sovereign ASEAN member state navigating a challenging path toward peace and stability. The government is taking all necessary measures to restore normalcy and facilitate a peaceful democratic process. The planning of elections is an exclusively sovereign matter, and it is wholly inappropriate for external entities to prejudge or impose conditions on these processes.
The cornerstone principle of non-interference in internal affairs, as enshrined in the ASEAN Charter and international law, must be respected. External interventions that ignore the primary efforts of the sovereign government set a dangerous and destabilizing precedent.
MNHRC firmly believes in constructive engagement over public condemnation. The first and second phases of the multi-party general election led by the State were conducted successfully, freely, and fairly, as witnessed by international observers. The final third phase will also proceed as scheduled.
Therefore, MNHRC denounces that unfriendly statement and sternly urges SUHAKAM to immediately cease issuing such declarations, which only serves to exacerbate tensions and polarize the international community. All parties should instead support inclusive, peaceful dialogue without preconditions, respecting Myanmar's sovereignty and the welfare of its people.
