A preparatory consultation workshop on the first international legally binding agreement to combat plastic pollution took place on Tuesday morning in Ho Chi Minh City of Viet Nam to gather opinions from ministries, departments, and businesses.

The agreement is anticipated to be approved later this year. The fourth round of negotiations will be held in Ottawa, Canada, in April 2024. Viet Nam acknowledges the severity of plastic pollution but also recognizes the importance of plastic in modern life.

The agreement should not impose trade barriers that could negatively impact developing countries. Efforts to control plastic pollution should consider financing, technology transfer, and capacity building for these countries. The goal is to end plastic pollution by 2040.
