Portugal has experienced severe drought for several months, with the Algarve in the south hit hardest, prompting the government to limit water consumption.

This highlights the issue of water usage on golf courses, as 40 out of 43 in the region use drinking water to maintain their grass. The Portuguese government has imposed a 15% water reduction for the entire population and released €43 million to renovate the Algarve's water mains.

Projects include a €2 million effort in Tavira to rebuild 8 km of pipes dating back to the 1960s. Water reserves in the Algarve are at an all-time low, with potential losses for farmers estimated at over €100 million this year.
