The latest discoveries in the ancient city of Pompeii are enriching knowledge about the everyday lives of the city's households. The director of the archaeological site said that excavations of rooms in a home first unearthed in 2018, revealed the environment of ordinary citizens of the city, which was flourishing before it was destroyed by the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D.

He suggested the inhabitants of the home were aiming to climb the social ladder, since a ground-floor courtyard was exquisitely decorated, while interior rooms were modestly furnished. Discovered in the house was an open trunk and furniture resembling modern-day accent tables. Excavations decades ago mainly highlighted extravagant, upper-class villas.
