Peru president calls for 'calm' after 6.1-magnitude earthquake, says no tsunami alert

On Sunday, a 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck off the central coast of Peru, rattling the capital city, Lima, and the nearby port city of Callao. The quake occurred at 11:35 A.M. local time in the Pacific Ocean, with its epicenter located 23 kilometers southwest of Callao.

The tremors were felt across all districts of Lima . In response to the disaster, President Dina Boluarte visited Callao to monitor developments and assess the situation. The Peruvian government is actively coordinating emergency response efforts and providing support to the affected communities.

Despite the significant shaking, authorities have confirmed that there is no tsunami threat associated with this earthquake. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a statement indicating that the tsunami threat has passed, and no hazardous waves are expected .
