Peru inaugurates new government weather radar

Peru launched operations for its new weather radar developed and made entirely in Peru.Operations for the meteorological device, the 'Scanning-system for Observation of Peruvian Hydro meteorological-events' (SOPHY) was inaugurated at a ceremony hosted by the Peruvian Ministry of the Environment at the Jicamarca Geophysical Radio Institute.

The decision to build the radar too place in 2017 after a coastal El Nino produced heavy rains which caused flooding that damaged some 200,000 homes and covered 2,530 kilometers of roadways.Scientists will use the radar to study the effects of climate change in Peru using its unique computer weather capabilities.
