A bundle of joy was delivered in the form of a baby orangutan at the Oregon Zoo this week as 20-year-old Bornean orangutan Kitra had her first baby on April 13.

The Zoo says the pair are doing well and bonding in the zoo's special maternity den. It will be several weeks before the unnamed baby's gender is known.

The gestation period for orangutans is usually about 8.5 months, with newborns weighing around 3 pounds. Care staff and veterinarians are closely monitoring their health, as Bornean orangutans are a critically endangered species.

During their first two years, baby orangutans are totally dependent on their mother for all food and mobility. After the mother and baby are assessed to be ready, the pair will be officially unveiled to the public.
