Onion cultivation in Salin: Over 14,000-acre of onions have been cultivated this year

In Salin township, local people grow about 8 acres of onions for the first time in the interval period.  Growers started cultivated the onion seeds in July and planted the seedlings in mid of August this year and onions are usually grows in winter season.  

In Salin Township, more than 14,000 acres of onions have been planted this year and about 19,000 acres were cultivated in previous year.

Myint Lin, Officer, Department of Agriculture, said " In Salin, the onions are usually planted in winter season. Currently, the old onions are out of stock and the new onions will appear in the interval period. These new onions can get the good prices at 30,000 kyats and it cans a lot of beneficial for growers. The onions that have planted in winter season are sold at the prices between 500 kyats and 600 kyats."

Due to the early planting of onions, the growers can get good prices and local people can get a lot of job opportunities in the region.

Mg Mg Lwin, Grower, Hsinbhyukyun, said " This is the onions of Myittha township. In Myittha township, the local growers have been planted the onions for many years. In this year, the onions get good prices. The consumers can buy at the fair price if we can produce the onions in the interval period and growers can get a lot of benefits. These onions that I have planned are not the local variety and the prices of seeds are expensive. It costs at between 60,000 kyats and 80,000 kyats per pyi. The prices of our local onions seeds are between 25,000 kyats and 35,000 kyats per pyi."

The Myanmar onions are mainly grown in Pakokku, Salin, Hsinbhyukyun, Yenangyoung, Kyaukpadaung, Taungdwingti, Myingyan, Myittha, Kyaukse, Monywa, Yinmabin Townships and exported to Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia.
