One million children in Afghanistan are suffering from life-threatening malnutrition in a worsening new crisis hitting the country, the United Nations warned Tuesday.
Tajudeen Oyewale, Afghanistan Representative, UNICEF said "Across the country, 3.7 million children suffer from wasting. They are acutely malnourished. Including, one million children from life-threatening severe acute malnutrition. Nearly 40 percent of children admitted to hospitals with severe wasting and medical complications are babies under the age of six months old. And children who are under two years account for more than 80 percent of severe acute malnutrition cases that we are recording across the country."
Afghanistan has endured repeated hunger crises in recent decades as it has struggled through civil war and other crises.
