A winter storm packing heavy snow was expected to roll into the District of Columbia, northern Virginia and central Maryland overnight; bringing at least 3 to 7 inches of snow to the area through Monday afternoon. The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for the area from 1 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST Monday. Wind gusts of up to 35 mph were forecast and travel was expected to be very difficult.

Several school districts in the region said they would be closed, delayed or have virtual learning Monday. DC Public Schools said students and staff wouldn't be returning to school until Thursday. The snowfall is expected is also expected to reach areas to the north. The National Weather Service says between half an inch and two inches of snow are expected for areas of northeast New Jersey, New York City and Long Island on Monday. "This city is prepared," said New York City's new Mayor, Eric Adams.
