King Harald V of Norway died at the age of 89 on Friday, at Oslo University Hospital. King Harald had been hospitalized since August 17, receiving treatment for a blood condition and a bacterial infection. He ascended the throne in January 1991 and served as Norway's head of state for over three decades.

The royals remain broadly popular with the Norwegian public, in large part to Harald's unifying status and his unassuming, modest lifestyle.
