A new island is born in Venice

A new island has emerged near Venice’s Lido in the area known as Bacan, remaining visible year-round for the first time. Previously submerged during winter due to rising waters, the landmass has remained above water, which experts attribute to the MOSE flood defense system. Operational since 2020, the system has helped regulate water levels, preventing seasonal submersion and altering the lagoon’s landscape.
