Ireland's parliament was set Thursday to formally elect Micheal Martin as the EU member's new prime minister a day late after opposition parties blocked the vote.

Overnight talks looked set to break the deadlock over speaking rights, with Thursday's parliamentary session in Dublin expected to finally see the appointment of Martin and government ministers. Martin had been due to be nominated and elected Wednesday as prime minister ahead of a vote in the Dail (Irish parliament).
