




The monitoring and evaluation workshop of the Project of Climate Change Center-CCC Program of Activities for distribution of Improved Cook Stoves (ICS) in developing South and Southeast Asian countries (Myanmar) with collaboration of Dryzone Greening Department under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation and the Climate Change Center (CCC) of the Republic of Korea was held at Thingaha Hotel, Nay Pyi Taw in the morning on January 10.
In his remark at the workshop, the Union Minister U KhinMaung Yi said the 70% of total population of Myanmar are the rural population, their major fuels for cooking are the firewood and charcoal and yearly requirement of firewood is about 17 million cubic tons which is 76% of total amount of energy.
The rising of requirement for firewood is a challenge facing in the implementation of sustainability of forest natural resource, conservation of natural forest remnants and combating process of desertification. The Dryzone Greening Department has distributed over 742,000 efficient cooking stoves to the people in free of charge from 1997 to date to reduce the using firewood. In order to accelerate the distribution of efficient cooking stoves, it’s implementing cooperation with the international organizations.
With the collaboration of Climate Change Center (CCC) of the Republic of Korea, a total of 218,955 efficient cooking stoves within two years of project period and over 385,000 tons of carbon emission could be mitigated. Based on the outcomes of monitoring and evaluation during the project period, the efforts are needed to put for better results.
Next, the responsible officials clarified the implementation of the project, read the research papers regarding with the use of efficient cooking stoves and the attendees gave necessary suggestions. This project facilitates to reduce the use of firewood by distribution of efficient stocks and conserving natural forest remnants.
It’s a United Nations-Clean Development Mechanism (UN-CDM) project in Myanmar to acquire the Certified Emission Reduction-CER with the linkage of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Present at the occasion were the deputy ministers, permanent secretaries, director generals, representatives from Climate Change Center (CCC) of the Republic of Korea and representatives from the relevant ministries, it’s learnt.
