A green group said dangerous microplastics are commonly found in the bodies of wild animals in Hong Kong. Greenpeace collected 100 samples of animal faeces in seven countryside areas between June and August 2022. Among the 100 samples, 85 percent were detected to contain microplastics.

The concentration of microplastics was highest in cow faeces with a median of 65.5 pieces per gram. Greenpeace said plastic pollution can have consequences, posing a dangerous risk to the food chain. The government implemented its first phase of regulation of single-use plastics in April. The green group said this is just the first step.
